xbox 360 update wont work ? :(?

i downloaded the update to play old games…put on cd using cd wizard…but as soon as i put it in xbox it said cannot update because hard drive dissconnected or disc unreadable…why is this i did everything it said to putting it on disc….i have internet i tryed to hook it up but u need an xbox live account which i dont want…..and i dont want to buy a copy as it cost money
